POLYTAN SYNTHETIC SURFACES Polytan’s brand world Polytan has been one of the leading manufacturers of sports flooring for over 50 years. Our products enjoy an excellent reputation around the world. In recent years, our success and associated growth have resulted in the continual addition of new products, which have now established themselves as brands in various markets worldwide. Brands such as Rekortan or Poligras now have a fixed place in the his- tory of sports floors. A Rekortan running track was used at the Olympic Games in 1972 at the Olympic Stadium in Munich and in 1984 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Poligras hockey synthetic turf is regularly used as a playing field surface at the Olympic Games. More recent product brands such as LigaTurf are however now also known worldwide for synthetic turf systems in football or rugby. Our brands at a glance Regional product brands Demand and requirements for sports flooring vary widely around the world. On the one hand, the preference for diffe- rent types of sport plays a role here, and on the other hand, our sports floors must also fulfil different national standards. Furthermore, very specific use cases and areas of application must also be taken into account. All of these aspects have led to an enormous diversification of our product range in order to coordinate our products perfectly to the customer‘s application. For example, texturised synthetic turf is particularly popular in Germany, but also in other markets. We combine these products under our LigaGrass product family. Fall protection surface coverings and synthetic surface coverings with smooth surfaces, which are often used in school yards on multifunc- tional playing fields, are marketed under the PolyPlay brand. Tartan is the synonym for running track surface coverings in Europe. In the Polytan brand world, this brand is therefore synonymous with special running track structures. In France, Laykold is an established brand for tennis floors. Outside of Germany, GYM is another regional product brand which stands for our indoor surfaces.
THE COMPANY Polytan combines special products for professional football and rugby synthetic turf pitches under LigaTurf. With the introduction of sand and rubber-filled turf systems, LigaTurf started its success story more than 12 years ago and served as a playing field in top-division stadiums, as it still does to- day. A new milestone has been recently announced with the world‘s first CO2 neutral synthetic turf, LigaTurf Cross GT zero. Polytan‘s running tracks have always been good for records. The word record is also the origin for the name Rekortan. The „tan“ comes from the name „Tartan“ – also a Polytan brand. Tartan was first used at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City. A Rekortan running track from Polytan is still laid in many Diamond League stadiums today. Hockey fields have a long tradition at Polytan. Apart from one exception, all Olympic hockey tournaments have been held on Polytan synthetic turf this millennium. Poligras Tokyo GT will also be used in Tokyo. In addition to its excellent playing properties, it is also characterised by its good CO2 balance thanks to the use of renewable raw materials. The international hockey elite has already gained experience on the turf, for example during FIH Pro League matches. The Poligras brand has existed for several decades and also has its origins in Germany.

This also creates new challenges for Sales. Reason enough for us to have a conversation with Polytan’s Heads of Sales, Fred van Wijk (EMEA) and Peter Herbig (DACH). Gentlemen, a general question to start: What is the future of synthetic sports floors? Peter Herbig: The future is green. Sustainability will also play an increasingly important role in our industry. We always need to take that into account. But we are pioneers in our industry and can provide the right answers. Fred van Wijk: Environmental protection is a major subject, but we must not forget the athlete when developing our products. Sustainability and the best-possible conditions for sport: That is the challenge which we have to face 10
How do you want to achieve this? Peter Herbig: We are on the right path. Our LigaTurf GT zero is the first CO2 neutral synthetic turf. Our Green Technology campaign is a clear indication that we are tackling the issue in a holistic manner. Fred van Wijk: We master the entire value chain. We research and develop our products ourselves, we pro- duce them and we install them. We can take care of the system and recycle it on request. We are ahead of the competition in this respect. Even the laboratories which test and certify our products do not know their composition. When I joined Polytan eight years ago, I often wondered why the products were so durable and high-quality. Now I know why. We know the pro- ducts better than anyone else. Peter Herbig: That is true. We possess the expertise, the drive and a unique value chain. That makes us strong and is why we have a lead on the issues ahead. Our new products are the best proof of this. Polytan products are often copied but never equalled. Fred van Wijk: Our qualitative standards are extre- mely high, as are the demands we place on ourselves. PEOPLE & POLYTAN In Germany in particular, there have been an increasing number of voices in recent months that have spoken out against synthetic turf in favour of natural turf. Your opinion? Peter Herbig: Quite simply: Particularly in metropolitan areas, synthetic turf is the only way to maintain playing surfaces. Synthetic turf can be played on all year round, even in winter or when there is a drought in sum- mer. It is clear to everyone involved that the required hours of play, especially in metro- politan areas, can only be achieved with synthetic turf pitches. Fred van Wijk: In addition, playing hours on synthetic turf pitches are cheaper than on natural grass. FRED VAN WIJK, HEAD OF EMEA SALES PETER HERBIG, HEAD OF DACH SALES I have been working for Polytan as Head of EMEA Sales for eight years. They have been very instructive years for me. Because today I have a better idea of what determines success and what matters in the sports flooring business. I am excited to be able to further develop products, open up new markets and continuously expand as part of the team. I am still an enthusiastic tennis player in my spare time. I owe this passion to my parents, who brought me from football to tennis as a child. After my military service, I was even a tennis profes- sional and organiser of tennis events. Today, together with my team, I am a Belgian champion in the 55 years and older class. I have been working on the subject of sustainability in the sports flooring industry for a very long time. In my opinion, sustainability is one of the great social challenges and I am pleased that Polytan sees itself as a global leader in this area in our industry. At the beginning of 2020, I took on sales responsibility for Germany, Austria and Switzerland. I am a passionate sales person. I don’t just sell from my desk, I also like to be outside with the customers. Intensive exchange within the team and with my sales colleagues is particularly important to me. We live in a very difficult time with great challenges. However I see Polytan as well prepared on the big issues of sustainability and innovation – which, incidentally, was one reason why I chose this company as my new employer. Climate change and sustainability will also remain key issues in our industry. We have strong messages, innovative products and solutions and can provide our customers with planning certainty. In my spare time, I am a real family man and, of course, also a football fan. My heart beats “royal blue” and, from time to time, you can find me in the stadium at Schalke, which unfortunately will not be possible in the foreseeable future. 12
Sustainability is a major trend in sports flooring. Are there any others? Fred van Wijk: Yes, sport is moving to cities. Space is scarce, which is why you need robust floors that can be used for sports. Teams are getting smaller, sport is becoming more spontaneous. Without sacrificing durability and performance characteristics, Polytan has created a product which combines the challenges of environmental sustainability, climate compatibility and player demands. The LigaTurf Cross GT zero combines the needs of local or private investors and the requirements of players and users. The combination of crimped LigaGrass Pro filaments with Polytan PreciTex Technology and the smooth LigaTurf RS+ filament, which is considered the benchmark for football turf filaments, is a real bestseller in the Polytan portfolio. Production was converted to green electricity in the summer of 2019. This is a measure that benefits all the products in our portfolio, including the LigaTurf Cross GT zero. Emergency brake applied There is no greater goal for any athlete than to com- pete at the Olympic Games. The same goes for Elisa Gräve, a national hockey player from Düsseldorf HC. Until mid-March, the budding psychologist oriented her life more than usual towards sports. And then came the news that had long been feared: The IOC (International Olympic Committee) applied the emergency brake. Because of the coronavirus, the Games were postponed until next year. „First I asked myself, what am I going to do now?“, says the 23-year-old. Her daily routine revolved around the games. Everything else took a back seat. Training camps, test matches, a free semester, It was the right decision to cancel the games in these circumstances no indoor season, but rather individual training: Life was completely focused on Tokyo. And suddenly it was everything back to zero. „It was the right decision to cancel the games in these circumstances.“ And when the masters degree is completed, the plan will start again: Full speed ahead for the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Tokyo 2020 set itself the goal of organising the first ever climate-neutral Olympic Games. This decision was a major challenge, including for the builders of the sports facilities. Polytan took up the challenge and is delivering the turf for the hockey competition, a domain of the company for many years. REFERENCES The teams will compete on the first sustainable hock- ey turf in the Olympic Games. The turf is made up of 60 % leftover sugar cane which is no longer usable for the production of syrup. This will guarantee that no food is destroyed or repurposed. A revolutionary bio- plastic is created from the natural material. Polytan is also following new paths when it comes to the elastic layer. The CO2 which is generated during production at the factory will be captured and flows into the pro- duction of the plastic layer as a component of the binding agent. However, Poligras Tokyo GT would not be a real Polytan turf if it didn’t also offer the highest requirements in terms of wear-and-tear and weather ef- fects. Thanks to its special composition, the temperature on the field is reduced. Compared to older complexes, water consumption could also be significantly reduced. The best hockey players in the world always expect the best playing field in the world. It was therefore very clear to Polytan from the beginning that we wanted to not only build the most ecological playing field, but also the one with the best playing conditions. In the development of Poligras Tokyo GT, Polytan also thought about the entire life cycle of the field and thereby created a recycling concept. We are also looking for products in our natural raw materials which require fewer fertilisers, pesticides and water during production and growth. We invest in the supply chain in order to create added value for our customers and a sustainable future for sport. How do you see the development of Tokyo GT and LigaTurf Cross GT zero? Pioneering products such as this synthetic turf require a variety of internal and external experts as well as strong, dedicated business partners. Internally, we have brought in our in-house expertise, consisting of research teams and members of staff from our global research and develop- ment network. Externally, we have created a network of competent partners consis- ting of external testing laboratories, universities, polymer scientists and material scientists. Sport Group is working with an international team of experts in Germany, the United States and Australia to develop the latest generation of synthetic turf products. Stephan Sick, Director of Research and Development at the Sport Group, leads the team and is one of the driving forces behind new Polytan products. In addition to pro- viding the best-possible conditions for athletes, he has also placed great emphasis on the subject of environmental protection. In recent years, the CO2 balance of many Polytan products has im- proved significantly and now extends to the CO2 neutral synthetic turf. At Polytan, we combine all of this under the term Green Technology (GT). But the journey is not over yet, as Stefan Sick confirms to us in an interview. What is the vision behind the Sport Group‘s Green Technology project? Our vision is to develop a completely green chain for sports flooring so that we will be able to produce climate-smart products for synthetic turf and running tracks. The participants are amateur footballers and they come from all over the world. In October 2019, a total of 40 teams played for the coveted world championship title on the beach of Rethymno on Crete. In eight groups, five teams competed against each other in the „Every- one vs. Everyone“ mode. The first two teams in each group then moved on to the knock-out stage and the current, small-pitch world football champion Russia was ultimately the winner. This enables the players from the Teramo Calcio football club to digitally record, analyse and document their training performance. In Teramo, Fusion GT Infill was used for the first time in Italy as infill granulate; it consists of around 70 percent natural materials. In addition to a variety of features, PolyPlay Arena is also available in a vandalism-protected version as well as with an option for noise- reducing boards. Top-class high-speed synthetic surface for Doha REFERENCES The choice when it came to the new installation in 2019 again fell on the Rekortan PUR system from Polytan. It is a 15 mm-thick solid synthetic surface which also delivers optimum force reduction and acceleration values thanks to the combination of an elastic base layer and a solid construc- tion. It was not without reason that in 2019 – the year of its 50th birthday – Rekortan was the most frequently World Athletic Class 1 certified tartan surface. In summer 2019 Polytan laid new Rekortan synthetic sur- faces on no less than two athletics tracks in the Qatar Sports Club in the Qatari capital Doha: the main track in the Qatar SC Stadium and the warm-up track immediately beside it. They were installed ahead of the 17th World Athletics Championships in order to give athletes an op- portunity to prepare for their competitions. Both facilities are certified World Athletics Class 1 (formerly IAAF Class 1). The installation was carried out by the contractor Bilal Al Abdalla of Waves Trading & Contracting W.L.L. in record time. It is an experienced local Polytan partner which has already been able to deliver more than 20 running tracks within the space of a few years. The Qatar Sports Club has been involved in major sporting events for almost a decade: it was where the Qatar Athletic Super Grand Prix, the first stop on the Wanda Diamond League athletics series (formerly the IAAF Diamond League), was held for the first time in 2010. The Rekortan synthetic surface was already providing the optimum base for top achievements back in 2010. In 2020 the Diamond League will be returning to the Qatar Sports Club, having found a temporary home in the Khalifa International Stadium – the venue for the World Athletics Championships – in 2019. 35

The Polytan Anti-Compac- tion System (ACS) is a precisely defined combination of a synthetic turf surface, infill granules and an elastic layer. The combination selected has significant influ- ence on the preferred play properties, as well as the durability and longevity of the system. TURF FILAMENTS Together with the infill and elastic layer, the turf fila- ments tufted onto a backing determine the protection and playing properties of the turf system. Subfloor preparation A B C Polytan football, rugby and hockey turf systems are generally installed on a base layer without a binder in conjunction with a bound elastic base layer. Standard DIN 18035-7 describes the requirements that the sub- structure has to fulfil. BOUND, ELASTIC BASE LAYER Bound, elastic base layers 35 mm thick and up are pro- duced in situ – that is, directly on site – from crushed stone and an elastic component in conjunction with a binder. They are water-permeable and completely flat and entirely seamless due to the in situ construction method. UNBOUND BASE LAYER On top of the elastic base layer, there is a single or multi-level base layer that is around 200 mm thick and is made of natural aggregates; this layer has a stable central framework without the use of a bonding agent. In combination with the elasticised base layer, this ensures the load-bearing capacity of the turf system, while its water- permeable design enables rainwater to quickly disperse. FOUNDATION The foundation, consisting of the substructure and subfloor, must have load-bearing capacity, and in par- ticular must ensure that the layers above it are even. It also absorbs seeping water or, in combination with a drainage system, supplies it to a run-off area. 39 39 ABC
Elastic layers for synthetic turf An overall system which is structurally coordinated and optimised in its individual components always guarantees optimal long-term use and consistently good playability of the synthetic turf system. The elastic layer and / or elastic base layer in an in-situ design plays a decisive role in this. For over 25 years, they have been a sustainable solution for the elastic substructure of synthetic turf at Polytan. With the even shock absorption and controlled damping of the elastic layer, the playing field retains excellent playing properties and, at the same time, a perfect protection function for the players throughout the entire service life. The elastic substructure prevents the joints, tendons and ligaments from be- coming overloaded during walking, jumping or quick twisting and stopping movements. With adjustable shock absorption values, the elastic layers can be adapted to the respective types of sport and therefore fulfil the different requirements of sports associations such as FIFA, FIH and World Rugby. All of these components are processed on site (in situ) and do not need to be moved over long transport routes. Over 90 percent of our elastic layers are therefore a post-consumer recycled product, i.e. a product which has already been subjected to a usage cycle. The service life of such an elastic layer is generally more than 35 years. It is therefore available for at least 2-3 synthetic turf generations and can also be quickly and easily upgraded for additional use if necessary. water permeable

Its properties contribute to a massive reduction of the filled rubber granules. But also for the unfilled or sand-filled synthetic turf fields, it offers playability that is gentle on the joints and elastic. The components for the elastic base layers are mixed by our experts, who then lay this mixture with special machines using the in situ installation procedure. Modern installation finishing machinery equipped with automatic levelling ensure absolutely precise installation and the right evenness. There are no joints or cuts created. Furthermore, the elastic (base) layer is water-permeable, so that the synthetic turf playing field can be used again immediately after heavy rain- fall. The Fusion GT infill consists of up to 70 percent natural materials such as hemp and chalk. The small infill compass A synthetic turf system is more than just a carpet made of green blades. The so-called infill is found on almost all synthetic turf playing fields. It is incorporated into the turf carpet and makes the synthetic turf pitch playable. The filling material has several functions: it stabilises the blades of the carpet, ensures that they do not lay flat and improves the rolling properties of the ball. Depending on the type of infill, it also provides an athlete the best bio-mechan- ical conditions, for example by its damping properties. The fill material is comprised of one or two layers. The lowest layer consists of sand on every pitch. The weight of the sand is required to stabilise the turf carpet. Sand is used exclusive- ly as infill on many pitches, which is inexpensive and does not require too much maintenance. However, sand does not provide the athlete with the same comfort as a second layer that is applied over the sand. The second layer can consist either of cork or rubber gran- ules. Both have significantly better damping properties than pure sand, and they differ in their other properties. Cork granules are a pure natural product. Since cork is very light, the granules float, during heavy rain faster than other infills and can be flushed from the pitch as a result. Strong wind can also result in the discharge of the cork. The intensity of mainte- nance is greater than with pitches filled purely with sand or the alternative for the damping layer, rubber granules. Rubber granules offer the best option due to their physical properties. Although they fall into the category of microplastics due to their size, Polytan products such as Fusion GT consist of up to 70 percent natural ma- terials such as hemp and chalk and meet the toy safety standard EN 71-3. Turf fibres All turf fibres made by Polytan are produced using a pre- mium PE polymer formulation which has been developed in-house. Special fibre geometries and cross-section de- signs make our turfs particularly resilient, and feature ex- traordinary shock absorption, a great deal of wear resist- ance and reliable fibre resilience. The particularly soft PE formula guarantees that it feels comfortable against the skin. Depending on the intended use, Polytan offers synthetic turf systems with straight or textured turf fibres, while two-colour filaments help to create a more natural grass look. Straight turf filaments The ideal choice for football pitches or play- ing fields used only for football. They feel soft for the players and create a natural feel for the match with perfect ball rolling and rebound properties. Almost exclusively straight turf fibres are used in professional football, rugby and American football. Textured turf filaments Although they previously mainly occupied the hockey pitch, textured turfs have undergone significant development over recent years, and become even softer due to special for- mulations and fibre designs. The textured structure efficiently holds sand and infill in place and ensures long-lasting volume. This means that these turfs enable intensive use while also providing a high level of availability and reduced costs for maintenance and care. Technologies for a safe, dynamic game With a huge number of innova- tions, Polytan continues to ensure that the play properties of artificial turf systems are increasingly sim- ilar to those of natural grass. ENTANGLEMENT TECHNOLOGY Our ENTANGLEMENT Technology cross-links the molecule chains in the turf fibres with each other to create an additional non-direc- tional molecular link. This results in improved abrasion protection and protection against UV age- ing, no splaying of thinner fibre areas and improved strength in all stress zones. POLYTAN SYNTHETIC SURFACES Synthetic surfaces: structure and technology SMOOTH SURFACE STRUCTURED SURFACE Synthetic surface systems are complex structures which are made up of different layers depending on the intended use. The elastic synthetic surface lay- er, which is 8 to 40 mm thick (and up to 130 mm thick for soft-impact surfaces), is the thinnest and yet most complex part of the entire system. It is crucial for defining the sports-specific and protec- tive properties of the turf. Depending on the spe- cific requirements in each case, different materials are brought together to form a surface that is tai- lored to the intended use. Synthetic surfaces may be water-permeable or waterproof, pour-coated or granulated, and solid or multi-layer. Whatever the design, it is always installed as a seamless, secure structure. 52 BASE LAYER The base layer made of rubber granules and a polyurethane bonding agent provides the material with the required elasticity.
